On Monday night (16), the rector of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), João Carlos Salles, issued a note recommending the suspension of classes at the institution.

The full statement follows:

Colleagues and Directors,
We took a step in the joint meeting of universities and institutes in Bahia, with the state secretaries of education and health. The generalized scenario of suspension in educational institutions was clear. This suspension measure, in fact, will already have support from the state government specifically for Salvador.
Therefore, I recommend that colleagues suspend class activities on our campuses from now on (Monday, March 16). This decision will be discussed and, I hope, endorsed at Consuni, this Wednesday, when the rectory will forward the proposal to suspend activities indefinitely, in order to be detailed in the Council meeting.
This position, which has been built every day, needed to be anticipated in the meeting with deans, before the authorities. Therefore, we inform him immediately.
Trusting everyone’s understanding, I thank you for your support at this time.
A strong and fraternal hug,
João Carlos
