In a four-month campaign, the “Nós nas Ruas” project has already distributed 4,607 fabric mask kits with soaps, 3,215 hygiene kits and 481 food kits (snacks and basic baskets) to people living on the streets in the city of Salvador. The action is developed by teachers and students of the Institute of Collective Health of UFBA, of the State University of Bahia (Uneb) and the Street Population Movement of Bahia.

The hygiene kits have products such as soaps, shampoos, alcohol gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, sanitary pads, shavers, deodorants, towels, tissue masks and mineral water, as well as pamphlets with general information about the new coronavirus and care with hygiene.

The objective of the project is to help contain the advance of Covid-19 in the most vulnerable part of the population. “We seek to provide minimum conditions for these people to be able to prevent themselves against Covid-19 in a completely adverse context, which is the street scene”, explains professor Joilda Nery, creator of the campaign.

All material is the result of donations and distributed in different regions of the city of Salvador, such as Barroquinha, Pelourinho, Aquidabã, Piedade, Pau da Lima, Comércio and Água de Meninos.

The goal is to continue the work for the next few months, but for that, the team needs to keep the minimum level of active donations. According to the teacher, the demand for materials is constant, especially in relation to the hygiene items needed to ensure people’s self-care.

“In order for us to be able to maintain the shares until September, we need to get 20 thousand units of each of these items”, he highlights.

In addition to the delivery of kits, the team develops health education activities with guidance on the disease and ways of prevention for people living on the streets served by the project.

Information about donation of materials can be obtained by phone / whatsapp (71) 98655-1074. It is possible to follow the actions developed and donations made through social networks. Instagram: @nosnasruas_ and @movimento_populacao_de_rua_ba / Facebook: @ nosnasruas1
