The Federal University of Bahia Graduate Programme in Collective Health (PPGSC-ISC/UFBA), created in 1973, is one of the oldest in the country. As recognition of its distinguished academic and scientific path in the last six years, it received the maximum score (seven) in the CAPES evaluation, being the only graduate programme in the north and northeast to have attained this distinction.

Starting with a Master’s course in Community Health, PPGSC was established in 1989, with the introduction of the PhD programme in Public Health, with epidemiology as the constitutive area, being the main field of research at the time. With the foundation of ISC in 1995, all of the Faculty of Medicine’s stricto sensu graduate courses in collective health were transferred to this new academic unit, structuring the Graduate Programme in Collective Health, with three areas of specialization: epidemiology; health planning and management and social sciences in health. From 2001, graduate teaching activities were expanded, with the introduction of the Professional Master’s Course in Collective Health (MPSC), evaluated with the maxim score by CAPES (five) since its foundation.

The ISC faculty has contributed decisively in qualifying professionals for health services, forming researchers and teachers who have become leaders at national and international institutions. Faculty and students have actively taken part in the events which have marked the movement that resulted in construction of the Brazilian Sanitary Reform proposal and SUS and made important contributions to establish Brazilian collective health, not only from the theoretical and conceptual point of view but also with relevant participation on the CNPq Advisory Committees and CAPES evaluation committees; actively participating on the Brazilian Association of Graduation Programmes in Collective Health (ABRASCO), as members of their Boards, Committees and Working Groups and, since its creation, at the Brazilian Health Studies Centre (CEBES) on a national level and organization of a centre in Bahia.

The ISC Graduate Programme in Collective Health pedagogical project is centred on systematic, creative and innovative education and training processes, whose fundamental strands are scientific investigation and links with health services and other intersectoral actions, producing institutional leaders.

The characteristics of the teaching-research process at PPGSC-ISC/UFBA seek to include:

  • The capacity to analyze the context in relation to the practices that are carried out;
  • Understanding, organizing and managing the health work process;
  • Exercise a communicative and strategic action;
  • Advocacy and/or the ability to report occurrences in which social rights are being compromised;
  • Tolerance and dialogue in situations of conflict;
  • Attention to problems and health needs;
  • Critical sense regarding effectiveness and the ethics of interventions proposed or performed;
  • Permanent questioning of the meaning and sense of its work and life projects.

In order to meet these pedagogical presuppositions, the ISC graduate student’s education is materialized from his incorporation in the Integrated Programmes of Research, Teaching and Technical Cooperation (PIs) which form the institute’s organizational structure. These programmes are organized around the main lines of investigation, allowing exchanges with professors from various national and foreign institutions, strengthening and consolidating multidisciplinary practice and institutional academic experience. The PIs involve scientific initiation and graduate students, health professionals from local institutions, trainees and researchers with projects in progress. This type of pedagogical organization maintains coherency with the ISC management structure, based on a matrix model and centred around the PIs, which cover a number of thematic areas.

O Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde Coletiva, composto pelos cursos de Mestrado em Saúde Coletiva e de Doutorado em Saúde Coletiva, originalmente denominados de Mestrado em Saúde Comunitária e Doutorado em Saúde Pública, respectivamente, o primeiro aprovado pela Câmara de Ensino de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em 17/09/1973 e credenciado pelo Conselho Federal de Educação em 12/06/1985, parecer nº 318/85, e o segundo instituído pelo Conselho de Coordenação em 07/12/1988, parecer nº 012/88, e pelo Mestrado Profissional em Saúde Coletiva, aprovado conforme parecer nº 1.26/00 de 13/09/2000 da Câmara de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa da UFBA e recomendado pelo CTC-CAPES em 08/12/00, tem como objetivo a qualificação de profissionais, professores e pesquisadores em Saúde Coletiva.

The Master’s and PhD programmes have a basic centre common to the three areas of specialization on their curriculum, preserving interdisciplinarity and specific courses and activities for each area.

The curricular structure of the graduate courses currently includes six mandatory and two elective courses, as well as oriented research, teaching practice, a qualifying exam and a dissertation or thesis project.

The centre’s courses which are common to the three areas of specialization are:

  • On the Master’s programme: epistemology and methodology in health; epidemiology in collective health; health, culture and society and health policies.
  • On the PhD programme: epistemology and methodology in health and health policies.

The mandatory courses for the PhD programme include two advanced seminars, the theory and methodology of each area, two specific courses and a critical seminar in each area, the latter comprising the mandatory activities.

  • Indigenous mental health;
  • Health, environment and work;
  • Sociology of chronic diseases and other long-term conditions;
  • Work and education in health;
  • Urban violence and health.
