ISC introduced the Professional Master’s Course in Collective Health (MPSC) in 2001, recommended by CAPES in December 2000. This programme qualifies health professionals involved with managing and executing services, who wish to further their knowledge, without necessarily pursuing an academic career. The course duration is one year and has six areas of specialization: teaching family health, managing health systems, sanitary surveillance, epidemiology in health services, health information systems and evaluating health technologies. This type of course is held specifically for institutions. Thus, the groups are formed through agreements or contracts. In order to hold a professional Master’s programme, the institution should contact ISC and send a letter specifying the area of interest in one of the professional Master’s courses (this can be via email).

Details of the process to hold a course:

  • Following receipt of the correspondence, the ISC Committee discusses the priorities and suggests a possible date within a pre-established schedule. It is then forwarded for a final decision by the Graduate College Board;
  • The College Board considers the request and suggests a possible date, forwarding a proposal with the programme and budget to the institution;
  • The institution sends correspondence accepting the conditions, containing a date and budget for formalization through an agreement or contract.

ISC also offers graduate lato sensu courses (specialization) for health professionals and those in related areas and short duration courses for training, updates or basic qualifications. The range of this type of course is defined according to the establishment of partnerships and the credit obtained from the subjects studied may be used in more advanced training stages. Some of the specialization courses which have been held are: workers’ health, information on health, communication in health, sanitary surveillance, epidemiological surveillance and managing health systems.
