Wheezing and tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, coughing, night waking, excess mucus or phlegm and difficulty performing some tasks. These are some of the symptoms of people who have one of the most common chronic conditions in the world: asthma. It is a chronic disease that impairs the routine and quality of life of patients. In Brazil, asthma is the 4th leading cause of hospitalization with over 140,000 hospitalizations per year and 2,177 deaths in Brazil in 2017, according to Datasus.

Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital Complex of the Federal University of Bahia and linked to the Ebeserh Network (Hupes-UFBA / Ebserh) is one of the reference hospitals in Bahia to treat the disease. There are currently around 500 patients registered for treatment, of which about 50 are in the maximum stage of asthma.

The disease requires corticosteroid treatment in addition to immunibiological use – more sophisticated and applied medication in patients who are in more advanced stages of asthma. However, pulmonologist Tatiana Galvão, one of the doctors responsible for the Hupes asthma outpatient clinic, explains that preventive measures for the disease are very effective in preventing crises. “Often patients neglect symptoms and do not get proper treatment. When this happens and the crisis is severe, the risk is enormous. Simple prevention methods such as pillow dust mite covers and environmental control can be instrumental in fighting the disease, ”he said.

In addition to preventive measures, the doctor also cites vaccines for influenza and pneumonia, for example, as ways to prevent asthma. Even following all medical recommendations, some people with asthma have greater difficulty controlling the symptoms of the disease. This may vary according to severity, with severe asthma requiring the most medication to be controlled. “Most patients respond well to treatment, but there is a percentage that develops the most severe asthma. The picture gets worse, and the person has more seizures and does not respond to the treatment used in the early stages of the disease, ”explains the pulmonologist.
