“There are a lot of people who need this service here,” says retired Germino Santana after being treated at one of the health units of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). The statement includes the opening video of the public lecture “University and the right to health,” held last Monday (10), in the Hall Noble of the Rectory.
The event was attended by the Rector João Carlos Salles, Vice-Rector Paulo Miguez and Professor Jairnilson Paim. Directors of UFBA’s health units also participated, as well as parliamentarians, representatives of social movements, professional class organs and heads of entities related to health.
Beyond what is seen
The figures released in the public class show the size of UFBA in the provision of health services to the population. Only the University Hospital Complex Professor Edgard Santos (HUPES-UFBA) is responsible for more than 1 million attendances annually. There are also innovative studies in the area of health, such as the HIV prevention project among 15-19 year olds, led by professors from the Institute of Collective Health (ISC) in partnership with the Institute of Humanities, Arts and Sciences Professor Milton Santos (HICS).
“How can we not be proud of the importance of our laboratories, of our units, of the hospital, of all services rendered to society? But it is good to remember that all this is also based on what has no immediate utility, which has to do with long-term research, “said Rector João Carlos Salles.
The defense of SUS
Throughout almost 50 years of academic life, all at UFBA, professor and researcher Jairnilson Paim talked about the commitment of the university and the need to expand the concept of health. For him, UFBA’s involvement goes far beyond working to train professionals, specialists and researchers, and emphasized the importance of partnerships with municipal and state secretariats, as well as the Ministry of Health itself. “Many of the services we have here are areas of support for the development of SUS, “he said.
Paim also highlighted the defense, strengthening and rescue of the SUS as the only way to guarantee the real right to health of the Brazilian population. “It is to face a set of measures aimed at dismantling SUS, which means striving to defeat Constitutional Amendment 95, which established a spending ceiling until 2036, which practically made SUS unviable and a set of public and social policies,” he said.
For the rector, the public class was an opportunity for UFBA to show solidarity with the health area, one of the most threatened in the current scenario. “It is also a way of remembering that it is, above all, university, this wonderful place of resistance,” he added.
Health, University and society
Produced by the ISC / UFBA Audiovisual Laboratory, the video “Health, University and Society” shows some of the main activities offered by UFBA in the promotion of public health. The work brings general numbers of the services provided by the units and testimonials of people who use the services directly.
